How do we think about challenging behaviour in the care of the elderly, and how do we manage it? The course has 7 chapters, each a lecture. The goal of the course is that you will be able to understand and manage challenging behaviour in everyday work in dementia care, but even learn to evaluate difficult situations and prevent them from occurring again.
The first chapters of the course are about how you think and act. And about why we sometimes slip into ineffective strategies when we encounter challenging behaviour. We will look at how we tend to view behaviour and the people we work with and what consequences our thinking have in our choice of methods.
In the later parts of the course we will look at different ways to manage challenging behaviour in care of the elderly. You will learn how to de-escalate in order to avoid chaos, how to manage a person in full blown chaos, and how to completely help a person to calm down after a crises. Then we will look at how to evaluate difficult situations and understand why they occurred, and last how you can work in order to avoid challenging situations in the future.
